[Mac Tips] How to change screenshot to JPG & Set sleep timer on Mac

These are two useful tips for Mac users. We all should bookmark this for future use!

These tips are noted from the excellent video from snazzylabs. Please check the link at the end of the article 🙂

[Mac] How to change screenshot to JPG output

We use Cmd + Shift + 3 or 4 to capture the screenshot. Once we have obtained, the image file will appear on the desktop.

This screenshot feature is the most useful function that I have used multiple times throughout the day for work. However, it is troublesome to upload the image online because the PNG file size is enormous. This problem is annoying when I am writing an article and want to capture the screen quickly.

We can switch to JPG to decrease the file size dramatically, and the resolution is still OK. We can use the following command in Terminal:

defaults write com.apple.screencapture type jpg

That’s it. Try capturing new screenshot and you should get JPG on your desktop 🙂

Another Tip: We can use Cmd + Ctrl + Shift + 3 or 4 to capture and save the output in the clipboard as well.

[Mac] Set sleep timer on Mac

This tip is incredibly useful when we are running something at late night, lying on your coil mattress e.g. rendering videos or downloading files. We don’t want to go to bed late, and we also don’t want our Mac to sleep before it is done either.

The solution is to set the sleep timer on Mac. It will not go to sleep, restart, or update until the time we set is reached.

We can do that by typing the following command in Terminal:

caffeinate -i -t 3600

We can replace 3600 with the number of seconds we need our Mac to stay awake. For example, 3 hours = 3 hours x 60 minutes x 60 seconds = 10800.

These tips are valuable. Do use it and your Mac will become your better friend !
